Positive Youth Development

Participants will understand how their involvement in a young person’s life can lead to long term positive outcomes

Adult Youth Interactions

This workshop will give participants tips on how to build strong, empowering relationships with youth. Participants will also discuss ways to break the ice with youth.

Engaging with Teens through Positive, Purposeful Interactions

This workshop focuses on increasing the intentionality of how we interact with teens in our programs and in our lives.  This training is appropriate for individuals new to the field and seasoned veterans.

Discussing Difficult Topics

Talking with youth about sensitive topics, such as alcohol & drug use, sexuality or suicide can be uncomfortable or scary. During this training we will discuss how you can be prepared to communicate effectively with youth to show you care.

Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness

This training will give an over of view of what to do if you suspect child abuse or neglect. Participants will be provided care steps and actions they can take to help ensure the safety of the youth they work with.

Homework Help

This course focuses on making homework help time effective by helping youth get organized, by providing an atmosphere that helps youth focus on their work, and by building a supportive relationship with youth. These elements help participants reconsider Homework Help as an opportunity to build relationships and nurture positive growth, beyond getting the work done.

Active Learning

Do you know the difference between active learning and “hands-on” learning?  Giving youth materials is just the beginning.  This interactive workshop introduces the “ingredients” of active learning, explains the role that active learning plays in the experiential learning cycle, and helps participants create more powerful learning opportunities for youth.

Ask-Listen-Encourage

Learn strategies to communicate with youth in a way that makes them feel supported and heard.  This interactive workshop introduces various communication techniques that help you build more supportive, youth-centered relationships.  Participants will learn how to ask more effective questions, to listen actively to youth, and offer youth encouragement rather than praise.

Building Community

This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of activities designed to support the community building process. Building an emotionally safe community of peers and adults is essential for youth to learn and develop as individuals.

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is an excellent way to nurture youth leadership, build community, and keep things fun.  This interactive workshop will equip participants with grouping strategies and ways to think about building cooperative learning into any program offering.

Planning and Reflection

This interactive workshop will introduce participants to powerful and easy to use methods that promote youth engagement in planning, implementing, and evaluating activities and projects.  Learn strategies to engage youth in the critical life skills of planning and reflection and be more intentional about including planning and reflection strategies into your daily routine and activities.

Re-framing Conflict

This workshop introduces participants to the High/Scope step-by-step model for reframing conflict as well as general principles of conflict resolution.  Participants will practice using new skills to turn a conflict situation into an opportunity for growth.

Structure and Clear Limits

Learn skills to prevent chaos in a youth environment without stifling youth’s positive energy.  Youth need structure and clear limits in order to feel safe. Participants will analyze the level of structure in their programs and practice identifying and maintaining clear limits.

Teen Advisory Council/ Youth in Governance

I this workshop participants will explore the key ingredients for creating dynamic youth-driven programs for teens.  We will explore ways to engage youth in providing voice into organizational governance and program development.

Youth Voice

Are you providing young people with authentic, meaningful choices throughout your program?  Does your program reflect the input of the youth involved?  Research shows that quality programs incorporate youth input at both activity and organizational levels.  This workshop will emphasize the importance of offering real choices and meaningful participation to youth, and nurturing youth leadership.  This interactive workshop is focused on providing meaningful choice within activities and opportunities for youth input within the youth program itself.

For Teens: Guerrilla Marketing

Are you passionate about a cause? Guerrilla marketing is an advertising strategy, in which low-cost unconventional means (graffiti, sticker bombing, flash mobs) are utilized, to get your message heard!

For Teens: Leadership Development

This workshop provides an overview of core concepts and skills needed to be a leader. Participant will identify key leadership traits that they possess and create an action statement on how to create change in their community.

RurAL CAP staff and partners offer professional training for youth serving professionals, volunteers, and supportive adults. We host several training events each year and offer travel scholarships pending funding availability.
